A phylogenetic tree is similar to a family tree. Family trees have branches that show the relationships between people in a family. In this means of organization, you can easily see the parents of one individual and look back to see other ancestors, such as great-grandparents. Phylogenetic trees show groups instead of individuals. One parent or common ancestral group usually branches off into two groups.

When scientists correctly classify an organism, they try to find its place in the phylogenetic tree. Correctly classifying organisms can be difficult. The task is easier now, however, than it was before Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection. Before Darwin, scientists had trouble explaining the ideas that later became known as divergence and convergence. Divergence is when one species splits into others. When one species separates (or becomes separated) into different environments, the groups adapt to become distinct species over time. After Darwin, scientists were able to link differences in similar species to differences in their environments.
